What is Agent Engine Optimization?

Agent Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring websites, APIs, data, and digital services so that autonomous AI agents can discover them, understand their capabilities, and execute actions through them — such as bookings, purchases, data retrieval, comparisons, and workflow steps.

AEO operates on the premise that the next primary user of digital infrastructure is not a human browsing a website, but an AI agent acting on behalf of a human.


The problem AEO solves#

An autonomous agent tasked with “Book me a flight to Lisbon under 400 euros next month” needs to:

  1. Discover airlines and booking platforms that serve the route
  2. Read structured pricing, availability, and constraint data
  3. Compare options against the user’s budget and preferences
  4. Execute a booking through a machine-readable transaction interface
  5. Verify the outcome and return a confirmation

Most digital infrastructure today supports step 1 and partially step 2. Steps 3 through 5 require infrastructure that most organizations do not yet provide.

That gap — between what agents can understand and what they can act on — is what AEO addresses.


What AEO is not#

AEO is not rebranded SEO. SEO optimizes for human search behavior and ranking algorithms. AEO optimizes for machine-driven task execution.

AEO is not the same as GEO. Generative Engine Optimization focuses on being cited in AI-generated answers. AEO focuses on being used as a tool or endpoint by an autonomous agent.

AEO is not a future concept. The protocols are being built now. Google and Shopify launched the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) in January 2026. Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) is production-ready. OpenAI and Stripe are developing the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP). The infrastructure layer exists — most businesses simply have not adapted to it.


The two layers of AEO#

Read Layer#

Making content discoverable and understandable by AI systems. This includes structured data, schema markup, semantic HTML, llms.txt files, and content that AI can summarize and cite accurately.

This is what most of the market currently calls “AEO” or “Answer Engine Optimization.” It is necessary but insufficient.

Execution Layer#

Making digital services actionable by autonomous agents. This includes APIs, protocol compatibility (MCP, UCP, A2A), deterministic data structures, machine-readable constraints, state transitions, and transaction interfaces.

This is the layer that creates real differentiation — and real business impact — as agents move from answering questions to completing tasks.


Who needs AEO now#

Immediately relevant (2026):

  • E-commerce platforms and online retailers (UCP/MCP ecosystem is live)
  • Travel and booking services (classic agent use case)
  • B2B SaaS with API products (already machine-readable, need agent discovery)
  • DevTools and API platforms (MCP integration is direct value)

Relevant within 12 to 18 months:

  • Fintech and payment providers
  • B2B procurement and supply chain
  • Enterprise software vendors

Longer horizon (2027 and beyond):

  • Healthcare, legal, and regulated industries
  • Complex consulting and advisory services

These protocols are complementary, not competing. A complete agent interaction might use MCP for data access, UCP for the transaction, AP2 for payment, and A2A for multi-agent coordination.
