Three protocols dominate the infrastructure layer of Agent Engine Optimization in 2026. Each solves a different problem. Choosing the wrong one wastes development time. Choosing the right combination gives agents a complete path from data access through transaction completion.

MCP (Model Context Protocol) connects agents to your data. UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol) handles the full commerce lifecycle. ACP (Agentic Commerce Protocol) enables direct checkout inside ChatGPT without the buyer ever visiting your site.

MCP: giving agents access to your data and tools#

Anthropic developed MCP and moved it to the Linux Foundation. It is a vertical integration protocol. An MCP server exposes your internal data sources, documents, and tools to AI agents through a standardized JSON-RPC interface.

MCP answers one question: what can this system tell me and what tools can I use? It lets agents query your CMS, retrieve documents, check database records, and call internal functions. It does not handle payments, checkout flows, or commercial transactions on its own.

UCP: managing the full commerce lifecycle#

Google developed UCP in partnership with Shopify, Target, Walmart, Etsy, and Wayfair. It launched at NRF in January 2026. UCP is the protocol for the entire commerce lifecycle: inventory checks, price negotiation, payment authorization, order submission, and fulfillment tracking.

The most important technical innovation is the Capability Declaration. Your shop publishes a JSON manifest file at /.well-known/ucp that tells agents exactly which transactions, discounts, payment methods, and policies you support. The agent reads this manifest before attempting any interaction, so it never has to guess.

UCP works with the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) for cryptographic payment mandates and audit trails. Together they enable agents to check inventory, validate pricing, authorize payment, submit orders, and track fulfillment through a single standardized flow.

OpenAI developed ACP in partnership with Stripe. It is an open-source protocol designed specifically to minimize friction by handling checkout directly within the ChatGPT interface.

The key mechanism is the SharedPaymentToken. The buyer’s payment credentials are securely shared with the merchant without the buyer ever leaving ChatGPT. The agent handles product selection, the ACP protocol handles secure payment token exchange, and the transaction completes natively inside the conversation.

Use ACP when your primary agent-driven sales channel is ChatGPT, when you want zero-redirect checkout (the buyer never visits your website), and when you use Stripe as your payment processor (ACP integrates natively with Stripe’s infrastructure).

How the three protocols work together#

The protocols are not competitors. They serve different layers of the same stack.

MCP provides the data layer. An agent uses MCP to access your product catalog, check specifications, and retrieve documentation.

UCP provides the commerce layer. Once the agent has the data it needs, UCP handles the transaction: inventory reservation, price validation, payment authorization, and order submission.

ACP provides the interface layer for ChatGPT specifically. It wraps the checkout experience inside the ChatGPT conversation using secure payment tokens.

A complete agent-ready infrastructure might use all three: MCP for data access, UCP for the commerce lifecycle in Google-powered agent workflows, and ACP for ChatGPT-native transactions.
