Headless Commerce Explained#
Headless commerce is an ecommerce architecture where the storefront is separated from the commerce backend. The backend manages products, prices, inventory, carts, checkout, payments, and orders. The frontend controls the shopping experience. The two layers communicate through APIs, which creates flexibility but also adds engineering and SEO responsibility.
How does headless commerce work?#
In a traditional ecommerce platform, the storefront and backend are tightly connected. A theme renders product pages, category pages, cart pages, and checkout flows from the same system.
In a headless setup, the commerce backend becomes the engine. A separate frontend, often built with React, Next.js, Remix, Hydrogen, Nuxt, or another framework, requests product and cart data through APIs.
Shopify’s Storefront API is one official example. Shopify says it enables custom shopping experiences across web, apps, and games, including product browsing, carts, and checkout-related flows.

Brands choose headless commerce when a standard storefront cannot support the experience they need.

SEO requirements for headless commerce#
Headless commerce can work well for SEO, but only when the frontend is built like a crawlable website, not only like an app.

Minimum SEO requirements:

Checkout is the sensitive part#
Checkout is where headless projects often get expensive. Payment security, fraud checks, taxes, shipping, discounts, consent, customer accounts, refunds, and order confirmation all meet there.
Many brands keep the platform’s native checkout and customize the rest of the storefront. That is often safer than rebuilding the entire checkout experience.

Headless Shopify and headless WooCommerce#
Shopify can be used headlessly through Storefront API and Hydrogen. This lets teams keep Shopify’s commerce backend while building a custom storefront.
WooCommerce can also be used headlessly, but teams must be careful with carts, checkout, plugins, caching, and updates. WooCommerce’s plugin ecosystem is useful in a traditional setup, but some plugin behavior does not automatically transfer to a custom frontend.
When is headless commerce worth it?#
Headless commerce is worth considering when the frontend experience is central to revenue or operations. If a custom configurator increases conversion, if one product catalog must feed several country sites, or if AI agents need structured commerce actions, the extra complexity may pay off.
It is usually not worth it for a small shop with normal product pages, basic categories, and standard checkout needs.
