A minimal endpoint accepts a JSON payload with the required fields, validates the input, triggers the business process (sends an email, creates a record, calls an external API), and returns a JSON response with status, confirmation identifier, and next steps.

Implement input validation that rejects malformed requests before they reach your business logic. An agent that sends an invalid date format should receive a clear error, not a system crash.

Use idempotency keys for any action that creates or modifies state. If the same request arrives twice (common with agent retries), the second request should return the same result without creating a duplicate booking or order.

Log every agent interaction. Timestamps, request payloads, response payloads, and originating agent identifier. This is essential for the feedback loops that improve accuracy over time.

Testing agent transactions#

Before going live, test every endpoint with these checks:

Can the endpoint be discovered through the action schema on the page? Parse the page as an agent would and verify the schema points to a working URL.

Does the endpoint accept the documented input format and return the documented output format? Send a valid request and verify the response matches the schema description.

Does the endpoint handle invalid input gracefully? Send malformed requests and verify the error responses are structured and informative.

Does the endpoint handle duplicate requests safely? Send the same valid request twice and verify no duplicate actions are created.

Does the endpoint respond within acceptable latency? Agents typically timeout after 10 to 30 seconds. Your endpoint should respond well within that window.
